Redefining the Birmingham Palette

Birmingham has never been shy about bold flavour. From the curry houses of the Balti Triangle to the street-food counters of Digbeth, this is a city that eats with curiosity and knows its way around a spice rack. So it feels right that West African food has finally found a proper home here, and at The Spot Lounge we’ve built the whole experience around it.

Afro cuisine is food made to be shared: slow-cooked richness, layered spice, and dishes that arrive warm enough to gather a crowd. If you’ve never tried it, a few things are worth ordering first.

Jollof rice is the heart of any West African table, smoky and tomato-rich and endlessly argued over across the continent. Ours is cooked low and slow until every grain carries the flavour. If you want heat, go for the suya, skewers of grilled meat rubbed in a peanut-and-chilli spice blend and charred over open flame, the kind of thing you keep reaching for long after you’re full.

For something deeper, the pepper soup is a warming, aromatic broth that was practically made for a cold Birmingham evening, and the egusi, a hearty stew thickened with ground melon seeds and leafy greens, is comfort in a bowl. Whatever you order, don’t skip the fried plantain. Sweet, golden and impossible to put down, it quietly steals the show every time.

What ties it all together isn’t only the spice, though. It’s the welcome. West African hospitality is generous by nature, and that’s the feeling we’ve tried to hold onto here: good food, warm light, and a room that makes you want to stay longer than you planned. Whether it’s your first taste of jollof or you’ve been missing the flavours of home, there’s a seat for you.

The Spot Lounge is Birmingham’s home for Afro dining and late-night lounging. Book a table and come hungry.
